What Does Window Installation Include?
Your Window Installers Will Take Care of Most Everything

Getting new windows is an effective way to enhance your home’s comfort, energy efficiency, and curb appeal. But if you’ve never gone through the window installation process before, you might be wondering what it includes and what you can expect from the window company you’ve chosen.
Keep reading to learn what window installation includes when you select new construction windows versus replacement windows, and which one could help you save money on window installation costs.
Typical Process for Installing a Window
No matter what window type you choose, there’s a typical process the window company will follow when installing your windows.
This process includes:
- Preparing the window area.
- Installing the new window.
- Ensuring proper alignment.
- Inserting the sash (the moving parts of the window) into the frame.
- Adding insulation as needed.
- Cleaning up the work area.

All of these should be included in the window installation process. However, the specific steps installers take depend on the type of new windows you’ve selected for your home.
Full-Frame Window Installation
You may need full-frame window installation if your existing window frame is damaged, or the building materials around your window need to be replaced, too. Full-frame installation requires new construction windows, not typical window replacements.
A full-frame window installation includes removing your old window, the sill, and the interior and exterior trim. Your installers will also add insulation and a drip-edge. Because full-frame installation is more complex, you can anticipate the cost of window installation to be a bit higher than a replacement window.
After installation is complete, you may need to touch up your interior or exterior paint. This is typically not included in the cost of window installation, although some companies may do it for you.
“Pocket” Replacement Installation
Pocket installation is the method used to install replacement windows within an existing window frame. Instead of removing the entire window and rebuilding it, the replacement window slides into place. Insulation and caulking should be included when installing a window.
Replacement window installation does not usually require interior or exterior trim removal, but it should include cleaning up around the area after work is completed. Because the process is less complex than installing new construction windows, replacement window installation is usually a little cheaper, as are the window products themselves.
Always Ask What’s Included
Before you agree to window installation, ask the window company you’ve chosen what is specifically included in their service. Sometimes these are listed as line items on a detailed estimate, and other times, the estimate is more general. This should also be laid out in any contract that you sign with a trusted company.
Most window companies include the following:
- Removing your old window.
- Cleaning up the area around the window opening.
- Adding insulation around the opening, if needed.
- Installing the new window, and checking that it is balanced and straight.
- Sealing around any seams with caulk.
- Cleaning up after the project.
Some window companies may offer additional services, like touching up paint for you or cutting and installing brand-new trim. If these home improvement services are important to you, ask about them during the estimate process.
What to Look for During Your Post-Installation Walkthrough
After your new windows are installed, the window company should give you the chance to look at their work and ask questions. Here’s what you should look for:
- Instructions on how your new windows work. Ask the crew to show you how to operate your new windows.
- Signs of damage. Check that the panes of glass are not broken. Look for any dents, dings, or signs of warping in the frame or sashes.
- Smooth operation. Your windows should easily open and close without sticking. They should securely lock shut. Make sure any tilt features, like for cleaning, work as they should.
- Proper caulking. Check that the caulk line forms a smooth, continuous seal around your windows. The line should be even, without bumps or messes.
- Warranty information. Find out where to get written documentation about the manufacturer’s warranty and the labor warranty, if applicable.
