What Causes House Siding Paint to Peel?

If you’ve noticed that the paint on your siding is starting to peel, you’re probably wondering what caused this to happen. Whether you intend to repair your existing siding or replace it entirely, it’s important to know what led to the peeling so that you can prevent the same issue from occurring again in the future.
In many cases, paint peels off of house siding as a result of moisture infiltration. With wood siding, for instance, once moisture comes into contact with the wood, it causes it to swell, which in turn stretches the paint and eventually forces it to crack and peel. Once this happens, it makes it that much easier for additional moisture to enter through the resulting cracks, leading to even more peeling.
Other Causes of Peeling Paint
In addition to moisture infiltration, there are a number of other things that can cause house siding paint to peel, such as:
- Failing to properly clean the siding prior to painting
- Neglecting to use primer where appropriate
- Painting when the temperature is too low
- Applying a second coat of paint before the first one has dried
- Covering latex paint with oil paint
