The Differences Between Low-E, Tempered, and Tinted Glass In Replacement Windows

Here’s What You Should Expect From Them

new windows

If you’re considering replacement windows for your home, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of options and types of glass available.

Let’s demystify the process of choosing new windows. Keep reading to learn the difference between types of glass and the signs it’s time to schedule new window installation.

What Are Low-E Glass Window Replacements?

Low-E is short for low-emissivity glass. It has a virtually invisible layer of metal or metallic oxide incorporated into the glazing surface that can help reduce heating and cooling energy loss by as much as 50%.

Low heating and cooling energy loss means your HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard to heat or cool your home because the conditioned air doesn’t pass through your windows.

The low-E coating is usually found on windows with multiple glass panes with argon gas between layers. Argon is a non-toxic, colorless, odorless gas that works with your windows to prevent heat or cooling loss.

What Are Tempered Glass Replacement Windows?

Tempered glass is sometimes called toughened glass, and it is stronger than regular glass. However, this does not mean it’s unbreakable.

Certain types of window replacements require the use of tempered glass based on how large they are or where they are located. For example, bathroom windows located within a home’s shower stall are often made of tempered glass. This is because tempered glass breaks differently than regular glass.

When regular glass breaks, it forms sharp, jagged pieces. When tempered glass breaks, it does so into dull cube-like chunks, so people or pets are less likely to be injured.

What Is Tinted Glass?

There are two ways your windows may be tinted. First, they were made that way, using pigments and dyes during the manufacturing process to darken the glass. The second way you can get tinted glass is by applying window film to it after your replacement windows are installed.

Tinted glass can help reject heat from the sun, which is important on hot summer days. It also can block most of the sun’s harmful UV rays, which are known to cause certain types of skin cancer and can fade and damage your home furnishings.

What Types Of Glass Do Replacement Windows Come With?

If you’re planning on replacing windows in your home, you can make a choice about the type of glass you prefer in your windows. Replacement windows come in all shapes and sizes, and with all varieties of glass. This allows you to customize your home’s curb appeal and window functions to match your lifestyle and personal preferences.

Which Type Of Replacement Window Glass Is Most Energy Efficient?

Of the three types of glass we’ve covered, Low-E is the most energy efficient. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends Low-E windows with double or triple panes of glass with argon gas between them to insulate against outdoor temperatures.

Choosing the most energy-efficient replacement windows could save you up to 15% on your annual household energy bills – as much as $501 per year – depending on where you live.

How Much Do Window Replacements Cost With Each Type Of Glass?

The cost of window replacements depend on multiple factors:

  • The number of windows in your home
  • The size of windows in your home
  • The brand of windows you choose
  • The materials the window frames are made from
  • Window style
  • Where you live
  • Labor costs for installation

It’s impossible to provide an accurate dollar amount without knowing these details. A reputable replacement window installation company will never give you a base price upfront. They will help you get an accurate estimate and show you your available options for new windows after visiting your home.

Will I Eventually Need to Replace My Replacement Windows?

After decades of service, you may need to replace your replacement windows. However, for most homeowners, a single set of replacement windows last throughout the course of homeownership.

Signs You Need Replacement Windows Right Now

If your existing windows are old, it’s probably time to replace them. Call a home improvement company for an estimate if you notice these signs.

  1. The glass is foggy. This is a sign that the seals are broken and are likely letting outdoor temperatures into your home.
  2. The glass is cracked. Broken glass poses safety hazards.
  3. You install plastic wrap over your old windows every winter. Energy-efficient windows don’t need the extra help.
  4. The wooden window frames are rotting or mildewed. This can mean the window itself is structurally compromised. Mold and mildew are also health hazards.
  5. Your windows don’t easily open and close. Window mechanisms wear out over time. You don’t want to encounter an emergency and not be able to open a window.
  6. You plan to get new siding on your home. Replacement windows are easy to install during a siding project.

If you’ve now realized it’s time to upgrade your home’s windows, call a reputable window company to get a free estimate. Their team will show you your options and help you find the right solution for your home.
